Osmosis: The Molecular TheoryAccording to the title it could be expected that the book will be valuable in describing theory of osmosis. However, the text seems to be collection of several articles (not specified) of the author. No exhaustive review of the problematics is given, in fact author largely relies on older book of Glasstone. Also the explanations of author are suspect, e.g. he in contrary to literature claims that osmosis is solely diffusion process and seems to confound osmosis with capillary action. Last chapters are unbearable, authors tries in several paragraphs to deal with large areas as kinetic theory, subjects not directly connected with the title. Since the author simply tries to proliferate his own ideas (not correct), the book cannot be advised to any reader itnterested in Osmosis: The Molecular Theory.

While this is not the stuff of reading for the general public, it is for the scientist who is already knowledgeable of the mechanism of osmosis, the process of one liquid passing through a permeable membrane into another liquid.He says of the work, “We present the complete solution for osmosis. It includes an improved molecular model for solids, liquids and vapor pressure.†An engineer, he came into this study because of work related to seed storage. From there it progressed to molecular studies, not the usual path for engineers.Dr. Howlett’s book is little but mighty. It is loaded with math which he explains and illustrates with charts and graphs. His innovative ideas might be compared to those of Newton with gravity or Einstein with e=mc2. His ideas might just revolutionize the world of osmotic studies. The book is divided into five chapter, small but not an easy read if you don’t already have a background in osmosis study. The chapters are papers he has presented to professional associations as he worked out his experiments. If you’re interested in following the thinking of a man who’s not afraid to step out and take a risk, then read it. This is a book worth your consideration.
