This book is adorable. I was looking for a book that would explain the history of Saint Patrick's day in a simple, child friendly way. But, also I really wanted to know the background story for myself too! This book did just that and it is so cute. I love the illustrations. They are so fun and just make you want to dive in and try out some of the other holiday traditions (or take a trip to Ireland) to get a true feel for the holiday.
I bought this book (and others similar) primarily for pre-school grandchildren to introduce a little meaning to holidays and their country. Since they are board books, the older elementary children think of them as "baby books", however, seem to enjoy looking through them and verbally adding more facts (or asking questions). The book seems to take a few facts from history in order to highlight a special day. The wording and pictures are simple and thus the story easily remembered. My grandchildren of all ages seem to recall these books with growing up and the holidays.
So, I'm not gonna lie.I'm a mother of a 3.5 year old and I never knew who St Patrick was and what the importance of the day was. I thought it was for a bunch of drunks to soak themselves in vomit and green beer while other families make corned beef and cabbage....Boy was I far from the truth and have a totally different outlook on St Patricks Day now that I know the meaning behind the day and the person.
We love these books! This was the last one by Patricia A. Pingry that we needed to complete our collection. I love that she is able to explain holidays in a way that small kids understand.

Thought it would be more on the story kind of a childs book
Great for young children but all ages to learn about St Patrick. Has nice illustrations and simple story
Love the book. Just wish I'd gotten in time for St. Patrick's day. But now I'm ready for next year.
