Stephen Furtick, pastor and founder of the super-fast growing Elevation Church in Charlotte, North Carolina, wants Christians to be greater. Most Christians know that God has called them to something greater, but they get stuck in "miserable mediocrity," "comfortable complacency," the "lesser loser life." Can you relate to this: "going every day to a job you'd prefer to quit, doing decent work, being a pretty good person compared to your neighbor, paying your bills on time, and sporadically reading your Bible as though it's your guide to the great things God did in other people's lives in the past." I know I can. (Except that sometimes my bills get lost on my messy desk and I pay them late. I need to work on that.)Greater is a high-energy read, with all of the pop-culture references and theology-lite you would expect from the successful pastor of a seeker-oriented church. You surely wouldn't pick this book up expecting great theological depth, but Furtick does inspire without wandering off into humanistic heterodoxy. The result is effective motivational talk in biblical garb.I especially liked his admonition to "dream big but start small." It makes sense. For example, you want to be a spiritual giant? How about starting with praying ten minutes a day. Furtick reminds us that "you have everything you need to do all that God is calling you to do right now." Our problem is that "we spend all our time dreaming about where we wish we were and what we wish we had and no time investing in where we are and using what we have."I was inspired by Furtick's book, but less for its spiritual, biblical content than for Furtick's motivational message. He is a graduate of Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, so I'm thinking surely his sermons and the overall body of his writing has some solid biblical and theological teaching. There's not much sign of that here. Thanks to Waterbrook Multnomah and Edelweis for my complementary electronic review copy.
This book Greater, is just what I needed to start my New Year off right. I have to be honest and say that Steven Furtick has never been a favorite speaker or author of mine, although I have heard him in person and really was impressed, encouraged, and challenged by his message. But this book, about the Old Testament Prophet Elijah passing his mantle of ministry on to Elisha. Although Elijah had done great things, Elisha asked for a double portion of Elijah's anointing and in the end he did even greater things. And the great things is, you and I have been passed the mantle of Jesus and we can and will do even greater things than He did. These are Jesus words, not mine.If you need some fuel for your journey, this is a great book to start with this year.
I love how God is able to use different things to speak exactly to what I am feeling and experiencing in the moment. This book was exactly what I needed at this point in my life to help me make it through the period after I've burned my boats, and after I dug my ditches, and didn't see anything happen. I will keep going knowing that in God's time I will see and experience greater.Thank you for this inspired encouragement. :)
This book far exceeded my expectations in what I learned, and how I felt at it’s conclusion.I have seen the Pastor’s ministry on tv, and for me, the passionate (aka yelling) sermons are hard to endure - this book is nothing like that. Only the Pastor’s heart for Jesus comes through in a well written and thought provoking journey with Elijah and Elisha. I loved it. I pondered, considered, studied, and cried my way to the end. Highly recommend.
I cannot put this book down! I cannot tell you how many friends and strangers I have told about this book! I even got the 40 day devotional! Higly recommend if you are still searching for your ability to discern what your calling is and that you are meant for something else...GET THIS BOOK!
In fairness I probably should start by saying I am a huge fan of Steven Furtick. So my attempt to give a fair book review might be skewed a little, I really think Pastor Steven is a brilliant man of God. The nice thing about Greater is it complements many of the themes and ideas that were communicated in Sun Stand Still. Greater is less about self-help and more about a perspective shift to see God's ability to work powerfully in your life. I have a bias to these books because I wrote on a similar topic, so it is always exciting to see another Pastor with the same passion. The book follows the story of Elisha, he's the guy after Elijah, and follows a call to greater things in his life. Pastor Steven's great quality in writing is his ability to clearly communicate deep insights, simply. He tables the story of Elisha to launch into a conversation about burning plows to remove exit strategies and boldly walk towards a greater calling. He outlines the roadblocks, shares personal struggles and intermingles stories of people who have walked towards greater.Dealing with the negatives and leveraging the Shunammite woman speaks to dealing with suffering as a sign-post on the path to Greater. It is a welcomed encouragement and reminder that greater is a harder path than mundane and ordinary and the presence of God there as a comforter through hard times is always welcome.Greater is better than Great, not because Great is bad, because greater is a perspective aligned with God. Greater is a product of submission and humility to see God's perspective and ability in our lives. Pastor Steven's books are rich will excellent sermon analogies which double as great conversation points. He is witty insights and clearly communicates simple truths boldly about God.I read the book in a day, it is also littered with highlights that I will use in future messages. This certainly isn't an academic text, but it is an excellent read for a person who is searching for the next step in a life bookended by Christ. Our call is to greater things, not greatness. A well framed conversation that removes ego and celebrity and places God at the center.
