Black Volume 1 the beginning of what is very likely going to be the next great superhero epic that'll destined to be a major motion picture! I hate to give away too much about this book , because it's such a layered story. Racial politics, White Supremacy, History, perspectives and more. It starts with an act of mistaken identity and police brutality resulting in the deaths of 3 black teens. Or does it? Kareem Jenkins comes to in the back of a ambulance with bullet wounds peppering his body .Kareem discovers he is among that a percentage of the world's black population born with an quirk that gives them para-human abilities! But it only occurs in black people! This information is hidden from the world, creating factions among the informed. Those factions all attempt to recruit or capture new actives at any cost.Creator/ Writer-Kwanza Osajyefo , has crafted a story that is a page turner. EXTREMELY Woke, timely and never falls onto tired stereotypes ! His Kareem Jenkins is that kid you see everyday in your neighborhood.Some of his dialog is simply so deep and brilliant it's painful! Seriously!Designer Tim Smith3 has given the book a style and look character wise that relatable, familiar , and cool as hell! You'll find yourself going over characters repeatedly looking at the details . True diversity here on display , everyone gets to play! A bunch of standout characters on every page. None of the typical "urban" types. Just real folks in a weird situation handling their business for whatever the reason. Smith3 and Igle bring a definite afrocentric look to the character without being gaudy or silly.Illustrator Jamal Igle is a talent to watch for! Every single character looks entirely different from the next with little details that makes you wanna know more about them. He does more with black & White , grey tones and shadows than some do with full colors . Honestly you don't even miss the color! In his work you can see the influences-video games , anime etc all done very well . Tight! You see what a close crew works on this , everyone in the credits deserves a shoutout-each adding impressive skill along with Smith3 and Ingle to create a beautifully illustrated series.In addition to an epic story there's an "Designing Black" section with early sketches and info detailing the main characters and the script for Chapter 1! There's also a gallery of the variant covers for issue #1. BUY THIS BOOK!
The foundational concept is rock-solid: Imagine only black people had superpowers. Now take that concept and do pretty much nothing with it except make a cheap X-Men knock-off with it. That's pretty much what you get with BLACK. I expected something insightful. I got same-old, same-old comic tropes -- right down to Chris Claremont's forcing all his X-Men characters to speak in the heavy dialects of their countries of origin, except these characters represent apparently every black accent in the U.S. -- some of which need subtitles for the dialogue balloons, it gets so "Swamp People"-level.Given the subject matter, it's almost ironic to say, "This book needs color," but it's appallingly true because these black characters do look alike rendered in black-and-white art. Imagine trying to read a big hero vs. villain brouhaha in WILDC.A.T.S or WETWORKS in black and white -- good luck being able to ID anyone. And since these are all brand new characters...yeah, I had no idea who was fighting who at some points.For something that was so hailed for its innovative concept, I'm sorry to say it just doesn't stick the landing. Its sister-piece BLACK AF: AMERICA'S SWEETHEART, on the other hand, is an amazing application of this basic concept to the Superman mythos and is well worth picking up.

But the true cognoscenti know graphic novels are - at their best - an amazing blend of art literature and the theater of the mind." --John RidleyBlack Vol. reminds us that any story that succeeds more often than not invites us to re-read said work for not missed details or bluntly sharp dissection, but because we as readers enjoy reading. more specifically, we enjoy stories that widen the lens into and out of our respective imaginations. reading physical media--or digitally--is still very much a personal experience with habit, custom, etc. it is not a throwaway activity. the ease of done-in-one behavior of throwing out, forgetting about, deleting, etc. stories promotes a pattern of "reading" for completion's sake as opposed to savoring words, hanging onto art, or birthing spirited conversations is troubling to me or anyone who enjoys the written word or pictured word or a coupling of both. thankfully, Black vol 1 is deserving of re-reads and sparking virtual and real discussions regarding experiences, seminal moments, "superheroics", visual storytelling , and more.the story utilizes both images and moments that should not be unfamiliar to anyone with a pulse. to me, whether you stand left, right, center, etc. on ripped-from-realty moments isn't the terminal point of this story. the story contextualizes in a very real way the power of not superpowers, per se, but choices of the lead character, Kareem. Kareem's story via the twists and turns of the page begin on the "streets" but aren't necessarily defined solely by the tropes of them. he discovers his powers through a tragic event, finds himself at the center of a multi-layered conspiracy, doesn't solely define himself by the one of the plot points (black people can have superpowers), and isn't afraid to make choices that have consequences. I'm not going to delve too much into plot and story because the experience of reading this story is best left as a first-hand experience of discovery as opposed to my clumsy words to screen. all that said, it is refreshing to see an inspired penned story full o'words joined in tandem with dynamic art that goes after a story of big ideas and personal moments...and does so without fear of failure or daunted by the prospect of success. though some of us can guess how a "story" will end...I did enjoy that I didn't guess how team Black got us there.the story is not without its own creases that don't necessarily halt the flow of the story as they do point to the fact that this is the first time this creative team has worked together in the aim of creating something greater than its individual parts or areas of expertise. In particular, despite the distinctive looks of the characters, following some of the more involved panels became a little confusing in terms of differentiating actions by the action-makers. the challenge here is/was that this book has a large cast of characters not all of them get a chance to breathe on page and that is part of the challenge in surfacing characters not through just visualization but through impression left upon the reader. though it's a cost and creative issue, eight to twelve more pages of story could resolve this as much of visual storytelling is about those big moments as they are about letting the characters breath to make their respective marks on the page and the recollections of the passenger aka reader. there are threads to pull if you choose to knit-pick, but much much like anything else it serves as all the more reason for the creative forces behind Black to aim even higher on the sequel...and I have little doubt that they will outpace the expectations of those who enjoyed this piece of graphic fiction or those that remain challenged by the story and its apparent and more subtle intentions.theater of the mind, indeed...
WOW! The cover was so not what I was expecting in the book. Awesome story read concept alternate reality. Can't wait for book two.
