About the Author
Daniel Ladinsky has published four collections of poems by the great Sufi poet Hafiz: A Year with Hafiz, The Gift, The Subject Tonight Is Love, and I Heard God Laughing. His most recent collection is The Purity of Desire: 100 Poems of Rumi. For six years, he made his home in a spiritual community in western India, where he worked and lived with the intimate disciples and family of Avatar Meher Baba. His latest book is Darling, I Love You!, a collection of his original poetry in collaboration with acclaimed illustrator and MUTTS comic strip creator Patrick McDonnell.

This book is a sweet collection of poems in its own right. It is NOT, however, the work of Hafiz. Daniel Ladinsky never learned to speak or write Persian, therefore a translation would be impossible. Ladinsky himself says this work was the product of a "dream in which I saw Hafiz an an Infinite Fountaining Sun (I saw him as God), who sang hundreds of lines of his poetry to me in English, asking me to give that message to ‘my artists and seekers’".Please realize that this does not even touch the religious, cultural, literary significance of Hafiz's true poetry.
Hafiz is my favorite poet and I love the translations done by this writer. I have several of his books and this is another great one. I start my mornings by reading the daily contemplation and it's remarkable how they always speak to where I am at the time. That's the magic of Hafiz!
How I appreciate spending the year with Hafiz in daily readings. It slows me down so that I am better able to take in each poem more deeply. Hafiz is a “Perfected Master, someone who embodies a perfect understanding of the beauty and harmony of the universe.†In the poem "Why Saadi Sits Alone,†Ladinsky says: “Your destiny is winding toward the Perfect.†It is a matter of taste on how one prefers Hafiz renderings and translations in modern English. Mr. Ladinsky explains that his poems are not intended to be traditional or scholarly translations, but are “Hafiz-inspired†after years of immersion into the Sufi master's works and life. His use of contemporary idioms brings this 13th century poet into the 21st century for me, as his renderings capture Hafiz's heart and sight within the images. I have no doubt that Ladinsky knows his subject very well. I am inspired by A Year with Hafiz and with Mr. Ladinsky’s interpretations: “Do what most enables you to fly / and brings a feeling to the heart that makes you / glad to be alive.†What a lovely invitation to open my heart to the potential of understanding the universe more “perfectly.†Neala Shane
I've read several translations of his work and absolutely loved it. Reading these translations left me uninspired. He is the same translator of the collection that I loved. These though... for example "The truth is, I have been covering your butt, God, for quite a while now in various ways." Maybe Ladinsky is trying to make it more accessible for young people in the west? I dunno.
I look forward every morning to Hafiz's daily offering. Always inspiring and often so funny, noe can not help but laugh out loud. Great stuff!

The world is blessed that Mr Ladinsky delivered his renderings of the work of Hafiz. For most of us without poets like Ladinsky we would not be aware of Hafiz and his magic. A stunning collection of work.
Daniel Ladinsky's translations are always a stunning experience. This latest collection was a delight. I have mixed feeling about the 365 day structure of the compilation though. I am not a huge fan of having the book set up as such, but it does nothing to take away from the quality of these translations and this is definitley another superb installment in Ladinksy's Hafiz translations. Bravo.
