Dowd’s “Sea Kayaking: The Classic Manual for Touring, from Day Trips to Major Expeditions” was certainly worth the investment of money and the time it took to read it. His writing style is easy to follow and, for the most part, pretty objective. I skipped over about 30% of the book. Mainly because at almost 60 years old, I have chalked up tons of experience as a camper, outdoors cook, and whitewater paddler. So many of the things he covered for the novice were of no of interest. That being said, every other part of the book specifically about sea kayaking was worth its weight in gold. If you make one serious mistake out on the water it could be extremely costly (and dangerous). Putting that in perspective, the book deserves a spot on every kayaker’s bookshelf to be read and re-read.

Highly recommended. A fantastic, clearly written book by one of the founding members of the modern sea kayak movement. Dowd's gentle, patient tone comes from decades of experience. He makes important points about safety, trendiness, knowledge vs. certification, and most all, enjoying paddling.

I have followed Marc Silber's YouTube videos for some time, and was excited to learn he had created an AYP book. Many of his interviews of celebrated photographers are outstanding. But this book is so sketchy and basic that I cannot recommend it to anyone above the most elementary beginner level. In fact, if you have ever held a camera in your hands, you are probably too advanced to benefit much from this book. Moreover, some of the advice is absolutely astonishing. Marc presents a chapter on getting your work out to be shared and includes approaching galleries to try to get them to exhibit your work, yet at several points in the book argues strongly against making your own prints. No one knows what you wanted your image to express more than you do, so handing that file over to someone else after you have fiddled with the basics of managing a photo that Marc presents about Lightroom would be laughed at by galleries and destroyed by online criticism. Unless you work to get a final print, you cannot truly understand or experience the subtleties of the photographic art. Marc himself points out that his initiation as a photographer came when he worked out prints in the darkroom as a teenager and gave up drug store processing himself. Yet he tells the reader not to make his/her own prints? Hard to believe, given the ready availability and rapidly declining cost of inkjet printing these days.Also, the image examples in this book are tiny and very weak at best. For comparison, see Bruce Barnbaum's recently updated The Art of Photography if you want to see superb example reproductions, as well as detailed explanations of image processing in both color and black and white. These (both images and detailed processing steps) do not exist in AYP. In summary, this slight book will advance no one's photography and I would suggest that you turn elsewhere to learn more about the art. A very disappointing effort.

I did find some nice pointers in the book, but it really didn't live up to my expectations when it comes to stepping up my photography. I do understand that getting to know a camera depends on the brand, but some of the things to know were not explained enough, in my opinion. I also was disappointed when I got to the section on processing the image. The author only covers Lightroom and although he mentions Photoshop in the book doesn't even mention it when it came to the processing section.

An excellent and practical photography book designed to help you take the pictures you like and want to make most. How to look and compose, understand your camera so it becomes second nature and doesn't get in the way. Fine exercises or practice drills also designed to making taking pictures natural and improve skills.I opened this book right to a diagram that showed me something I hadn't understood before. Sweet.Marc Silber's desire is for his handbook to help a photographer advance whether beginner, intermediate or advanced.The color quality of the photos used as examples are quite good which for some reason I expected less in a smaller format book made to be carried with you on your photo expeditions as modest or grand as you chose them to be.A unique well thought out approach!

I just received my copy of this well written, easy to understand book on photography. Finally, after reading countless books on the subject, someone has produced a no nonsense approach to understanding and moving ahead in the field of photographic artistry. I love the format and the handbook design. My hats off to Marc Silber for offering this book on advancing photography from beginning visualizations to mastering the whole process.

I'm a professional photographer, I've written my own guide and I must say Marc does an amazingly thorough job here and at such a great value. I think hobbyists and pros alike will be able to take away something new and inspiring from this book. This was a very good book and a simple read. Read it through the first time and plannto keep it handy as a reference guide for future use. I suggest reading with a method of marking the most helpful items so you can easily reference when needed. This would be a great beginners guide for someone whose newer to photography. I've been doing it for a while so I knew the basics but still found several areas in the book to flag for later use.

I received this book in the mail weeks ago. I had watched the movie first, had a range of emotions at the end that entailed shock, sadness, anger, resentment, and eventually acceptance...Thought I would order the book because books can lend so much more detail and backstory that a movie simply cannot.I love reading. I have read many different genres, and have even slugged away through Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time series... and I thought Robert Jordan enjoyed his descriptions! But Robert Jordan's world was such that even though many passages and even in one case, an entire book were laborious to get through, I still re-read those books and have every single one of them.I have to say that usually when I get a new book, I finish it within a week, no matter how long it is. If it is really good, I will devour it in a few days.Well, it has been weeks that I have had this book and I haven't yet made it past part one. The part of the book I am currently on is where everyone has just gone out to search for the twins.I enjoy descriptions and feeling as though I am a part of the world the reader is trying to describe, but this novel is TOO wordy.So many adjectives and my eyes glaze over. Especially since I don't feel emotionally invested in really any of the characters because there is too much about everything else!When I read two pages about the sunset, all of it's colors, then in turn all of the colors it is turning the trees, leaves, and the surrounding areas and how if the character had just stood up and contorted their body in just the right way, then they would see these things that have just been described to me in full detail, I have a hard time really getting into the book.When there is so much description about the surroundings that several pages later the plot has not progressed, I start to think of other things I should or could be doing. And this is hard for me to admit, because I love reading.Reading should be an escape to another world where you don't have the voice in the back of your mind telling you about mundane household chores you should be doing!Sadly, though I want to like this book so rich in detail, it has too much detail. I will finish it, as I don't like to leave any book unfinished, but it will likely take quite some time, as I will read other books to take my mind off of the odious task of finishing Atonement.I will not be checking out anything else from this author.

I was completely absorbed by this book. The first part draws you into a confined setting, a very hot day in a country house and the preparations for welcoming the son of the house who is about to arrive with a friend. It lets you see the scene from the perspectives of the different characters in the house. Although McEwan focuses more on the internal lives of the characters than on external events, and devotes most of the attention to their impressions and reflections on what takes place around them, you feel the tension building steadily towards what certainly must become a disaster. The second part describes the dire consequences of these events, which grow out of the lively imagination of a young girl who half sees and half imagines what is happening in the house and tries, with good intentions, to put things right. McEwan ties everything together beautifully and elegantly in the last part where the young girl has grown old and has spent all the intervening years trying to reconcile herself with what she did as a child. I don't want to spoil anyone's reading experience by giving details. The book was rather different from what I had expected based on the descriptions, but it is certainly one of the better books that I have read. It is warmly recommended.

I found parts of the book heartbreaking, truly difficult to read. I enjoyed the author's lyrical writing very much. The words often were those I imagine Briony would have used. The book also taught life lessons, the least of which is to not speak about things you don't know or understand.

This was one of those novels I found brilliantly written, but incredibly boring.I had, probably, expectations way to high, so I was very disappointed with the book. It drags for an insufferable amount of time and when it comes to the big revelation it amounted to nothing. It works better in the movie, but even then, it had no impact in me.There are, of course, things that I liked and left me torn regarding the rating I would give this book. I loved the use that Ian McEwan makes of language. The way he masters long sentences, which is not very common in English language. I liked the idea of the different views of the same fact by the different characters and the way that propels the narrative, but I also thought that, in general, the book ended up being quite boring and excessively descriptive.

I've seen the movie a half dozen times and in between read the book twice. The movie experience has increased in emotional impact with each viewing. I first read the book a couple of years ago in paperback. I've just finished reading it a second time on Kindle. The Kindle reading was much better, taking notes, ranting about this and that was a pleasure missing in the book reading.The second reading completely overwhelmed me emotionally, it's difficult for me to say anything definitive. In the back of my mind lurked Rashoman, King Lear, Oedipus, Romeo and Juliet. And always there was opacity, a lack of clarity that added to the grief, compounded the tragedy. The novel within a novel only made things more horrific. It's all so thin, standing over the grave imploring the power of the almighty, so, so thin. But it's all we have, all Briony had.

I became aware of Ian McEwan through You Tube. He delivered the commencement address at Gettysburg College in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania.His address was on free speech and impressed me. So, I decided to read one of his books, and chose Atonement. It was a good choice. The story took awhile to gain traction for me. However, I am an experienced enough reader to know a slow starter can turn out to be worth being patient which proved to be the case. Atonement is perfectly in step with the rich British literary tradition.

I made two recipes from this book; I am an experienced cook and one recipe, Bloody Cobbler, was a complete failure from how the recipe was written. The filling boiled the cherries and sugar, then asked to add TWO CUPS of water. This looked strange, but I did it anyway, and it made a watery mess. I make lots of jams and jellies and pies and there was simply too much liquid to ever boil down to a reasonable filling, and it still managed to be too sweet. If they intended a thickener, it isn't in the recipe. The second recipe I tried was the Fall Salad, which sounded delicious. The dressing, however, called for 1 cup of apple cider to 1/2 cup apple vinegar to 1/4 cup of oil. If you make dressing, you can immediately see the problem in the ratio of fat to liquid. I reduced it to 1/2 cup juice and 1/4 cup vinegar and still made over 1.5 cups of dressing to be used on a single salad. Eh. That might have been fine, but the combination of salad ingredients just didn't work, it was like a kitchen sink of flavors that simply didn't come together. My cookbook club made other recipes from the book with similar, uneven or simply bad, results. The pictures are pretty, and that's about it.

If you love sour cream then get this book. I hate sour cream yet it does list a substition.Seriously, why do most recipes have sour cream?!The original drinks look interesting.I really bought this book to add to my collection as I'm a Tim Burton fan. The section about party themes and decorations is a cheap filler.I felt either this book should've been cheaper for the actual content or replace the filler content with additional recipes.If this goes on sale for less than $10.00 then do it, otherwise, don't spend $16.00 on this.

I LOVE LOVE LOVE IT! This book is so thoughtful well written and very inspiring plus the recipes are just to die for!! Zach neil is such a kind person including everyone and beetle house is just a place that'll take your breath away, its definitely worth it all around, THANK YOUU!

Interesting and whimsical recipes and everything I have tried so far has been wonderful! Some of the recipes are a bit time-consuming to make in their entirety, but the ingredients are easy to find and the book provides ideas for converting many of the recipes so they are vegan-friendly! The Soul Sauce is excellent.

Granddaughter liked it, but it was a little more babyish than I was expecting.

My 10 year old niece loved this for her birthday. She loves to cook and enjoyed looking at the recipes.

Loved it so much, ordered a second one to give as as a gift. I’ve been to the Beetlejouse restaurant, so this was a special cookbook for me.

Just like it says in the label, this is for kids that read with help. The story is one that interests my son and after reading the book together a few times he can read it by himself because he is familiar with the story. Many pages only have a few lines. The stickers at the end are a nice touch that each parent can decide how to use. As far as I know there are only two TMNT titles published by random house on level 2. We have both of them and I would buy more if available.Some parents may wonder if the book is violent or scary. This book has pictures of the Kraang, brain-like aliens that inhabit robots. There's fighting with the turtle weapons and two guys mutate into fairly ugly villains. I did not see any blood or killing. This is a good versus bad kind of plot.

I have two boys, 3 and 5 years old. Have done book time every night before bed starting around 16 months old with both. My older son is now starting to veer away from books at night, loses interest. He's building his reading abilities now, so needed to think of something to do to regain his interest, so he could continue to recognize words. They both love TMNT, so I ordered this book and a few others. It worked! He loves this book, the content was age appropriate as the excitement and illustrations held his attention and encourage him to ask questions and learn. Very pleased with seller and product!

Perfect for a Ninja Turtle fan! It's a good book for 8 year old daughter, not too hard but challenges her a little.

We gave this to our 5 year old Grandson for his birthday. He loved the story and it had just enough words to challenge his beginner reading skills.

My son loves TMNT so of course when he revieved this book reading time was no longer a struggle. It also has a decent storyline

As the title would suggest, this journal is split up into twelve weeks. It starts out with an introduction, than starts week one. Each week starts out with a place to put the study goals for the week, followed by a reading log. There are places to write prayers and praise, and to draw if one wishes. There are a couple of pages to write thanks, favorite verses and keywords, and a lot more. I thought these journals sounded like a neat idea. and I found that to be the case. They are well put together with a lot of room for pretty much anything one wants to write about their Bible reading and prayer throughout the week. This review is for the men's journal, and there are all kinds of neat drawings and illustrations that are geared for men throughout the journal. Each week has twelve pages, so there is no lack of space to write and draw. Granted, most men may not be into the drawing part, but it would do us guys good to do the journaling part. There are four different journals in this series: this one for men, one for women, one that is geared for book by book study, and one geared for memorizing Bible verses. Each has an attractive cover, and is geared to help study the Bible.I was given a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.

I bought this as a gift. I love the guided pages through verses just a blank journal. It's good quality.
